Our approach to investing

How we deliver on our investing promises to you and your clients

Delivering strong risk adjusted returns

Our centralised investment process (CIP) is at the core of all of our diversified investment solutions. It creates a wide range of investment solutions – diversified across asset classes, sectors, investment products and geographies – for your clients’ differing needs and risk appetites.

Our CIP brings together the expertise of Brooks Macdonald’s asset allocation committee, investment committee and sector research specialists to deliver a cohesive, proven strategy. We choose this method because it:

  • Consistently reflects the broad diversification principles of our investment philosophy across all our investment solutions.
  • Generates well-informed strategic ideas and uses them as widely as possible.
  • Provides clients with access to some leading investments through a single solution.
  • Delivers strong risk-adjusted returns for advisers and their clients.
  • Has an easy-to-understand process with demonstrable results.

The importance of robust research

Extensive research is key to the selection of best-in-class investment products to construct our diversified investment solutions.

Here’s how the process works:

Asset allocation

To meet the varying needs and risk appetites of clients, we construct solutions diversified across a range of geographic regions, sectors and asset classes, combining different investment solutions and vehicles into a single fund or portfolio.

The buy list

Once the Asset Allocation Committee has set the house view, it’s passed to our sector research teams. With oversight and peer review from our Asset Selection Committee, the ideas generated by the sector teams drive the ‘buy list’. Each investment is then vetted by the investment committee before being added to the buy list. The result is a substantial buy list of well-researched investments for our investment managers to use when constructing portfolios. The buy list is reviewed on an on-going basis to ensure that it’s made up of our best ideas for all market environments.

The ‘house view’

Our Asset Allocation Committee meets frequently to determine our ‘house view’ but it doesn’t stop there. We use external research to challenge our decisions and thinking. This outside scrutiny is vital. Our CIP is constructed around the views and opinions of many investment professionals, and we strive to avoid group think, but ultimately form a house view whilst maintaining open minds and a dynamic approach to changing circumstances.

Investment rules

Our investment rules, set by our executive level investment committee, have been designed to operate within the harshest conditions and are applied to all our investment solutions. The rules are key to our risk management framework which ensures daily checks and balances for deviations from expected volatility, asset allocation, buy list and concentration limits.
